Congratulations to Loyola University for winning the 2016 Potomac Rugby Conference Championship! Susquehanna traveled down to Loyola to face off in the first playoff match and the last of the semester. It was an offensive battle but Loyola pulled away for a 59-34 victory to advance to the Mid Atlantic Championships. This was a great way to end an amazing semester of rugby for Loyola. Off to the sweet 16! Tries were scored by Will Kinzer(2) Jimmy Cahill(2), Kyle Higgins, and Austin Kesselring. As of now, Loyola will travel down to Charlotte, NC to rematch Catholic in the sweet 16 on April 2nd.

In prep for playoffs, Loyola traveled up to New Rochelle, New York as they were invited to the 2016 Bowl Series at Iona College. Loyola took a loss to Binghamton. It was a tight first half but a late surge by Binghamton led them to a 52-27 win over Loyola. Despite the loss, this invitation to this bowl series was a huge accomplishment for Loyola rugby. Some of the best D-I teams were invited and being invited to this shows how far this program has come. Tries were scored by Jimmy Cahill, Luke Preston, Kyle Higgins, Justin Delcher, and Nicky Boneli.

40th anniversary event
Today celebrated the 40th university of the Loyola Rugby program. A huge day for the program as hundreds of players, fans, family, and alumni came to show support for the program. At 11 am, the Old Boy played against the New Boys. This was an all-alumni game as former Loyola ruggers battled it out. The game lead to a fitting 27-27 tie. At 1 pm, everyone watched Loyola rugby play Catholic. A heartbreaking loss but Loyola secured the conference championship. Afterwards, everyone got together for a huge barbecue. Later that night, the program hosted a gala. Players, parents, and alumni all got together to celebrate all the accomplishments this program achieved. An amazing day for Loyola Rugby. |

On Loyola Rugby’s 40th university of the club, the team lost in a heartbreaker in front of hundreds of fans and alumni’s. It was a back and forth match and Loyola had the lead with 35 seconds left. On the final play, Catholic jumped a pass and scored in the corner of the end zone. The match ended in a 34-31 loss. The Loyola ruggers fought hard but came up just short of an undefeated season. Tries were scored by Luke Preston(2), Kyle Higgins, and Vinny Sireci. Despite the loss, Loyola Rugby secured the Potomac Rugby Conference with a 6-1 record and a +266 point deferential.

Loyola traveled down to DC to take on American, the only other unbeaten team in Loyola’s conference (PRC). Stakes were high for this match as the conference championship was on the line. That’s where Loyola took care of business and defeated American 48-28. An amazing all-around game for Loyola. All of the hard training these ruggers put in week to week seemed to pay off in this match as Loyola stays unbeaten 6-0. Tries were scored by Kyle Higgins(2), Jimmy Cahill, Bobby Gordon, Patrick Frick, and Justin Delcher. Another fantastic kicking performance by Danny Giannascoli. Next up is Catholic to finish the regular season.

Loyola traveled down to DC to take on George Washington for the 3rd match of the season. Loyola had this one from start to finish and put up 62 points on them. The defense also dominated only letting in one try the whole match. 62-5 was the final and tries were scored by Jimmy Cahill(2), Kyle Higgins(2), Brian Ganun, Jack Longest, Vinny Sireci, Luke Preston, and Nilo Gerwatowski. That puts Loyola at 3-0 with a positive 136 point differential. Next game is at Gettysburg.

Loyola rugby kicked off the season with a solid win over Saint Marys. Led by senior captains Luke Preston and Jimmy Cahill, Loyola kept possession of the ball most of the game and put up 32 points. A solid defensive effort held St. Marys to 7 points. Although it was a commanding win for Loyola, there is much to work on as they made some mistakes that could have been avoided. It was a promising start to a great season! Congrats to freshmen Chris Linn, Justin Delcher, and Nilo Gerwatowski as they got their first Loyola rugby starts. Tries were scored by Bobby Gordon (2), Herb Gruinger, Justin Delcher, and Brian Ganun.
